Setting The Distance

Jay looked at his family and narrowed his eyes. Of course he had been through hell before but this...this was something else. He needed to be precise to get his family away safely. Those people, not people, animals were the most disgusting creatures he had ever come across.  "Listen to me carefully. I'm going to take the car, and we're going to get as far as we can go before setting off on foot once we have guns." He slowly narrowed his eyes. "Genie, Emery, and Nathan. You're twenty-two, but your age I was already coming up with my own ideas. I need you three to focus. You need to get to that car as soon as I give you the okay."  He looked at the distraught Genie who was having a difficult time focusing since the death of their mother.
"Genie you need to stop crying and put yourself together. One loss is enough I need you to keep your head up." He looked out the window at two figures. They were both wearing bandanna's over their mouths, and enough clothing to cover any part of their body that was exposed. 
They looked insane and for some odd reason, he felt as if he knew who it was. It could be none other than the psychos Ben, and Ashlee. They weren't afraid of something like this. If anything, it filled their blood lust and probably drove them more insane than the diseased themselves. 
Well, not really, but they were sadistic in those ways.  
Drawing his attention back to his family he got up and nodded to them before slipping out and into the car. After gesturing to them it was clear  he unlocked the doors and waited.

Nathan made sure his sisters got out before running after them. He looked around feeling as if they were being watched. For the most part, they were.

Summer hugged Genie back tightly.

Genie sat back next to Emery and looked over as she noticed the dead bodies along the ground, and some crucified. "Em..."

Emery shook her head. "Just don't look."

Jay finally stopped the car at a dock and looked around before getting out. "We need to plan our way out."

"Alright, how?" Summer asked.

Emery shrugged. "I say we make a run for it."

"To a sanctuary." Jay responded and looked over at the creatures playing with themselves and rolled his eyes. "It's funny how even this fucked up they're so human in that way."

Emery put a hand over her sister's eyes.

Genie sighed and relaxed as her sister put a hand over her eyes.  At least she understood.

Jay looked around. "Mom, the worst idea could be trying to find Alex am I right?"

"Yes." Summer nodded.

Emery patted her sister's back gently.

"Then we'll start forward on foot." Jay responded and tightened his backpack on him and began to walk. "Come on girls."

Summer nodded and followed her son.

Emery took her sister by the hand and tugged her along.

Jay pressed on walking for three hours before coming across a group of survivors.  "Great."

A boy stood up and made his way over to the man cautiously. "P-Please, my name is Aaron, let me travel with you."

A girl behind him came up and looked at the man longingly.

Jay looked back at his mother. "This is a bad idea I think we should leave them."

"If they aren't infected we should take them." Summer murmured.

"No way." Jay said and continued to hike along.

Aaron looked at the man. "Please, I'm begging you, we've been alone, it's hard."

Briar looked to the two girls as if pleading for help.

"Jay I'm not going to move until you agree." Summer responded stubbornly.

Jay narrowed his eyes. "They'll get us killed."

Aaron shook his head. "No. We'll do what you say." He said quickly. "There's only three of us."

Briar looked at the man and sighed.

Rory walked up beside Briar and nodded. "Please."

"No they wont." Summer huffed.

"Keep up." Jay growled and continued to trudge along now annoyed.

Briar looked at Aaron and Rory before following the group.

"How old are you three?" Genie asked.

"I'm a sophomore in college." Aaron said quickly. "Twenty two."

"Twenty one." Briar piped in.

"Twenty one." Rory nodded and walked beside everyone.

Emery walked beside her father quietly.

"A bad idea." Jay told his daughter a bit angrily. She would understand.

Genie grinned a bit. "Im guessing you were friends before this. Always ready huh?" He offered.

"You could say that." Briar responded and shrugged. "We're not big crowd type of people."

Aaron looked up front distantly. Why was that chick so far up ahead ignoring them.

"Not at all." Rory agreed.

Emery nodded. "Well, they will either fall behind or get picked off." She muttered.

"Think independently and stay away from everyone." Genie guessed as she travelled with the newcomers. "We're a lot like you, besides my dad and my sister, they only like keeping to themselves and people trust. If I died, my dad would avoid the hurt, my sister would breakdown for maybe an hour then hate everything and everyone she comes in contact with." She predicted. "She wouldn't be the same. In all honesty I think she needs me more than I need her."

Jay listened to Genie then glanced at Emery. "She has quite the theory huh?" He teased quietly not wanting Genie to know they were paying attention.

"Isn't that what every sibling thinks about one another?" Briar guessed.

Rory smirked a bit. "I wish I had a sister or brother to share that with."

Emery rolled her eyes. "Not true."

"No. I mean my brother died a few hours earlier today, I cried but it wasn't as bad as what it could have been if I lost her." Genie went on and looked up ahead at her sister. "She wasn't like this at all before. Something changed in her."

"Doesn't everyone change when something like this happens?" Aaron suggested travelling along.


"This was before this world went to hell. It's what I don't understand..." Genie said thoughtfully as she trailed along.

Jay glanced at Emery as if to validate what Genie had said was true. For the most part, it was.

Emery spun around and narrowed her eyes at her sister. "I'm fine Genie, stop telling people I'm broken or something ok?" She said and turned to continue walking.

Rory blinked and scratched her head. "So how come it would be worse if you lost your sister? Is it a twin thing? I mean you guys look identical so I'm guessing you're twins."
