Silence Before The Storm

Dean awoke startled, and hyperventilating. It was back to back nightmares each night. Losing more sleep than the next night before. Everyday became more foggy than the next. It was as if his body was left on autopilot. Everyone had their own unique way of coping with their losses but for him, he couldn't seem to find the right way. Every time he shut his eyes he only saw the head of the ax being swung toward his five year old's head, before those damned things took advantage of her body before his eyes. The only thing he remembered was a blur and being held back by two other survivors who dragged him along with them. It doesn't take much for someone to give up on their heart.
Wiping his face over with his hands he got dressed into his beanie, parka coat, and sweatpants before making his way outside. It was barely the crack of dawn, he could vaguely make out two  people on watch waiting to be relieved. At least putting himself to do something would keep him awake. Reaching the top, he wasn't much surprised to see Demi, and Carter. They often took watches together, yet the part he found funny was that you would never see them together besides when they were on watch.
"I'm up. You guys should go get some rest before you collapse." Dean murmured as he kept his hands in his pockets. He looked over at the psychos just across the ocean by the land. They were disgusting. His hatred for them burned within his gaze. Sometimes, like most, he would cease his hatred to wonder whether the little inch of humanity still lingered somewhere deep within their minds. Then he remembered.
It wasn't long before the piece of shits spotted them on the beacon and began to snarl like savage animals and jumped into the icy water in attempt to swim over only to be carried away by the current. 

Demi had sat up as soon as she saw the savages but relaxed as she noticed Dean hadn't really found it a threat. It was hell sitting up so high overnight barely shielded from the freezing winds. It was partially why she huddled up with her partner throughout the night when she was on watch.  Getting to her feet she climbed down from the beacon. Similar to everyone else, she came alone but something was so wrong. She was traumatized. All she ever felt was anger and the need to lash out at anyone who bothered her. She completed her duties everyday. Hell, she probably did more than others around her but she would never bring that up. As far as the leaders were concerned, she was too small to be of anyone's use. 
Since the death of one of their strongest members, Craig, the fucking dirtbag of the two leaders, have been picking on the weakest links. Before, it used to be that only the bravest or strongest would willingly volunteer to go back to mainland and try to return supplies. Often, it was successful but now, they had decided they'd be drawing names. Fucking fantastic. She knew she wouldn't be so lucky with the drawing tonight. 
She shook her head trying to rid of the thought of having to return to the sex crazed, bloody, sadistic murderers. For now, she just needed rest. 
The frosty ground crunched beneath her as she walked along back to the two buildings. One a barn they had managed to turn into a few individual rooms  with hammocks, and clothing lines with blankets over them for privacy, and the house was pretty much use for medical, or whoever had gotten there first.
Demi entered her own little space and shut her eyes when she laid on the bed. She was so tired she couldn't sleep. Maybe it was because she was worried.  No. She was never worried about things like this.

Sean stood on the sand. It had been two months since their departure and everyone had been ill and starved. He wasn't sure if they even had a week left before they just wore away. It had been dropping to temperatures below twenty, too cold too walk, and they have run out of enough food a month and a half ago. He missed Andrea more than ever now. He broke into a coughing fit and rubbed his tired eyes.

Sophie wriggled around in her sleep and whimpered a bit.

Petra walked up behind him and took his hand. "Come inside."

Erick wrapped an arm around Sophie and pulled her into him. He hadn't been able to sleep from the hunger piercing at his stomach. 

Sean grasped onto her hand. "Andrea..." He said quietly and followed her in.

Demi shivered beneath the blanket. "I can't feel my toes." She mumbled.

"She's fine." Petra promised him.

Sophie nuzzled against him as she whimpered an shivered.

Zepher curled up in her own corner, shivering slightly.

Sean looked at everyone once they were inside. It was obvious they were all literally freezing to death. One face was concerning him the most. Unlike the rest, Violet wasn't shaking. "Violet." He said walking over to her and crouched down putting a hand to her cheek recoiling a bit by how cold she was. "Violet?"

Violet breathed faintly. "I don't feel good..." She managed softly, already given up on her body.

Demi sat up as Sean focused his attention on Violet.

Erick turned his head to glance over at Violet. "What's wrong with her?"

Petra leaned don and scooped her up into her arms. "Come on, go get her our blankets." She told Sean quickly. "She's freezing to death."

Sean dragged the metal barrel with the fire closer to her and looked at Petra. "Blankets can't do much, her body isn't producing enough heat for her anymore." 

Violet felt her head slowly beginning to tilt back in Petra's arm as she fought the darkness unwilling to let go yet. "S-Save..." She uttered trying to finish. "B-Baby." 

Demi made her way over to them and put a hand on Violet. "Hey, Violet, you're gonna be okay."

"Go get me a knife from the kitchen." Petra said quietly.

"G-Gonna b-be okay..." Violet repeated to them softly, to comfort them, and finally let go.

Sean did as he was told  and returned with the knife turning away from the scene.

Erick got up. "What are you doing!" He shouted with tears streaming down his cheeks. "You're going to kill her!"

Demi shook Violet. "Stop! Stop it Violet! You're fine."

"Shes gone!" Petra shouted. "Move back so I can at least save one of them." She said, shoving Demi away and lifting Violets shirt to begin working.

Sean crouched beside her ready to help her with whatever she needed.

Demi backed away and curled up in her bed covering her ears and shutting her eyes.

Erick shook his head rapidly. "You killed her!" He choked out.

Petra took a deep breath. An hour later she was covered in blood and had a baby in her arms. "Here..." She said and handed the baby to Erick.

The boy writhed in Petra's arms wailing.

Erick stared at the boy wide eyed and backed away from him. He despised the baby. "I don't want him." He said in a hushed tone.

Sean wrapped the baby up in a blanket and looked at Petra passing her a towel to clean herself up. 

Demi glanced over as she heard the baby and looked over at them.

Petra slowly began to wipe herself off.

Sean looked down at Petra then back to Erick. "What do you want me to do with him?"

"Let him die." Erick sneered and turned away from them.

The boy continued to wail and  wriggle around.

Sophie looked at Erick in horror. "I can' believe you just said that." She frowned.

Zepher looked at the body in horror.

Allison ran around the medical room with a bandage on her knee from where she had scraped it. "Major come play!" She squealed.
