Silence Before The Storm

Dean awoke startled, and hyperventilating. It was back to back nightmares each night. Losing more sleep than the next night before. Everyday became more foggy than the next. It was as if his body was left on autopilot. Everyone had their own unique way of coping with their losses but for him, he couldn't seem to find the right way. Every time he shut his eyes he only saw the head of the ax being swung toward his five year old's head, before those damned things took advantage of her body before his eyes. The only thing he remembered was a blur and being held back by two other survivors who dragged him along with them. It doesn't take much for someone to give up on their heart.
Wiping his face over with his hands he got dressed into his beanie, parka coat, and sweatpants before making his way outside. It was barely the crack of dawn, he could vaguely make out two  people on watch waiting to be relieved. At least putting himself to do something would keep him awake. Reaching the top, he wasn't much surprised to see Demi, and Carter. They often took watches together, yet the part he found funny was that you would never see them together besides when they were on watch.
"I'm up. You guys should go get some rest before you collapse." Dean murmured as he kept his hands in his pockets. He looked over at the psychos just across the ocean by the land. They were disgusting. His hatred for them burned within his gaze. Sometimes, like most, he would cease his hatred to wonder whether the little inch of humanity still lingered somewhere deep within their minds. Then he remembered.
It wasn't long before the piece of shits spotted them on the beacon and began to snarl like savage animals and jumped into the icy water in attempt to swim over only to be carried away by the current. 

Demi had sat up as soon as she saw the savages but relaxed as she noticed Dean hadn't really found it a threat. It was hell sitting up so high overnight barely shielded from the freezing winds. It was partially why she huddled up with her partner throughout the night when she was on watch.  Getting to her feet she climbed down from the beacon. Similar to everyone else, she came alone but something was so wrong. She was traumatized. All she ever felt was anger and the need to lash out at anyone who bothered her. She completed her duties everyday. Hell, she probably did more than others around her but she would never bring that up. As far as the leaders were concerned, she was too small to be of anyone's use. 
Since the death of one of their strongest members, Craig, the fucking dirtbag of the two leaders, have been picking on the weakest links. Before, it used to be that only the bravest or strongest would willingly volunteer to go back to mainland and try to return supplies. Often, it was successful but now, they had decided they'd be drawing names. Fucking fantastic. She knew she wouldn't be so lucky with the drawing tonight. 
She shook her head trying to rid of the thought of having to return to the sex crazed, bloody, sadistic murderers. For now, she just needed rest. 
The frosty ground crunched beneath her as she walked along back to the two buildings. One a barn they had managed to turn into a few individual rooms  with hammocks, and clothing lines with blankets over them for privacy, and the house was pretty much use for medical, or whoever had gotten there first.
Demi entered her own little space and shut her eyes when she laid on the bed. She was so tired she couldn't sleep. Maybe it was because she was worried.  No. She was never worried about things like this.

"You share something special with her now. Something I can never give you." Sophie whispered softly.

Carter shook her head slowly. "It's too painful. Get out."

Petra ran her hands through the girls hair gently.

"I don't care." Erick sneered. "Don't leave me!"

Dean nodded and walked out without another word.

Sophie shook her head. "You're not listening. I can't give you that."

Carter began to bawl as soon as he left.

"What are you talking about?" Erick asked.

"I can't....you know, have kids?" Sophie mumbled.

"What?" Erick asked in disbelief. He knew it didn't lessen the way he felt but the way it altered everything he planned made him resent her a bit. 

Demi looked over at Sophie and raised a brow. "Should've gotten with Major then."

"What's that supposed to mean?" Sophie snapped at Demi.

"Major didn't want kids?" Demi responded rhetorically. 

Erick turned away from them. "I'm leaving." He murmured. Once they hit land he was going to do it.

"I'm scared." Violet mumbled to Petra.

"You should be." Petra admitted.

Sophie turned and glared at Erick. "Why do you think I never tell you anything? Because you just leave!"

"Good! I'm leaving now! And I'm  never coming back! Never!" Erick snapped back at her, feeling a bit pained. She was probably the only girl who shared his sense of humor, tolerated his bad behavior, and was just as reckless as he was when she wanted to be.

Violet clutched onto her and watched Sophie and Erick from the corner of her eye.

"Fine!" Sophie shouted and walked to the other side of the boat and crossed her arms.

"Fine!" Erick sneered right back at her. As they finally arrived he hopped off the boat despite Sean's following him. "Let it fucking go Sean I'm leaving none of you can stop me." 

"Good I'm glad you'll be able to explain to your kid where you went." Sean said following him.

Sophie remained on the boat and refused to move.

Zepher shrugged and got up to start searching for stuff.

Demi followed Zepher immediately grabbing a new pack of cigarettes and put one stick in her mouth before lighting it and inhaling as she searched.

"I don't care about it, I wanted it from her not Violet." Erick responded stubbornly.

"Well it happened, and you can't just push Sophie away because of that. You're going to let one quality ruin you two?" Sean asked.

Zepher wrinkled her nose. "Can you not?"

"What?" Demi rolled her eyes. "It's just smoke." She said and searched but remained at a distance so she wouldn't disturb her with the cig.

"Yeah she can't have the family I want!" Erick sneered. 

"You think that doesn't bother her?" Sean asked.

Zepher walked into a house alone to search carefully.

Sophie slowly got out of the boat to go on by herself.

Erick balled up his fists growing frustrated because of his  confusion. Turning around he noticed Sophie leaving and abruptly followed her and grabbed her hand. "I love you."

Demi waited a few minutes before creeping up behind Zepher and grabbing her. "Boo!"

Sean watched and quickly began to search.

Sophie glared at him. "No you don't."

Zepher yelped and frowned. "Why'd you do that?"

"Yeah? Sorry I do. I don't want to, but I do." Erick glared right back.

"Seeing how easily you  scare." Demi grinned. "Apparently pretty easy."

Sean kept guard as the others searched. "Petra stay in my sight."

"So bossy." Petra huffed and rolled her eyes.

"Prove it." Sophie sneered.

Zepher rolled her eyes and continued searching.

Sean frowned. "I'm not being bossy I just don't want you away from my sight, I don't want you hurt." He admitted then looked over as he noticed the boat suddenly taking off with crossed in it laughing insanely. "No, no, no, no, no!" He said running to the shore ready to jump in the water after it. "No!"

Erick's gaze softened as he noticed the boat rushing away from land. For the first time, worry crossing his expression. 

Demi followed her. "How old are you?"

"Fifteen." Zepher responded quietly.

Petra grabbed his arm. "Stop! There's nothing you can do."

Sophie shook her head. "No! We have to get back!"

Sean watched the boat get farther and felt his heart skip a few beats and looked at Petra then back to the fading boat. "What have I done..." 

Erick narrowed his eyes at Sean. "What the hell did you do!"

Demi blinked. "You look older."

Violet sat in the sand watching with her head low.

"Well I'm not." Zepher shrugged.

Petra shook her head. "It's not your fault."

Sophie huffed and began to walk away.
