Auspicious Evenings

Ryder stood at the back of the large brick building swaying lightly. It was New Years Eve and that meant the military's annual party. Since most men worked in the military in the city, much of the city usually attended. Including Ryder who had to bribe the bouncers at the door since she had no ties to the military. Every year was more and more extravagant. The building housed a bar in the back corner and a stage front and center that held the night's disc jockey and a couple strobe lights that were aimed directly at a plywood dance floor. Strands of twinkling lights of all colors were string all around the inside of the make-shift club. Only a couple people had shown up so far and were dispersed between the bar and some tables that were set up around the dance floor. Ryder looked up at a television screen that they had managed to hang high above the stage with the official countdown until midnight. There were still a couple hours to go, so she sat down at the bar to wait.

Ryder looked over at him and raised her brow, "What?"

Miles shook his head and put his hands in his pockets. "Nothing."

Ryder rubbed the back of her neck, feeling awkward that the two of them were just sitting there. "Are you hungry?" She asked curiously, "I can make some popcorn or something."

Miles rubbed his eyes. "I uh do you want to com to my place?" He offered.

Ryder shrugged and let her gaze wander around the room. "I would but it's late and I'm already here."

"Alright." Miles shrugged and slowly kissed her more passionately and got on top of her.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa buddy," Ryder grunted in surprise, quickly pushing him away. "What do you think you're doing?"

"Don't worry not trying to have sex if that was what you were afraid." Miles said after she pulled away and scratched the back of his head. "I'm sorry." He admitted. "Uh I'll go." He said after a moment and began to walk off.

Ryder watched him go and sighed quietly. "You don't have to go, you know. It's not that big of a deal."

"It's late." Miles responded gently. "I'll see you around." He said and walked out heading home.

"See you around then," Ryder replied and headed off to bed herself.

I fucked up. Miles thought uneasily and walked over to Cedar and Mia's apartment and grinned. "Hey guys happy new year."
