A Dance Through Fire

Alex laid back on his seat on the beach. He had only a piece of cloth on covering his private though everyone for the most part had. They had had to have found a way to live as modern day cities had collapsed after a great famine and anarchy came upon. For those who had evacuated they had not lived long, shot down by the army. He had gotten away with a group of friends before it all. Having their expenses paid by their parent's. He was only sixteen at the time however the eighteen year old had quickly become a tyrant during this peak of devastation. When other vacationers sought to rise above himself he had slit their necks only allowing those who were of peace, and friendship within his own mind to live on. Despite the anger he had received for doing such thing he was doing it to protect himself, and most of all his friend's and his own families.

Anthony sauntered back over to the fire once dusk had ended and sat by it watching as Alex turned the fish over the heat.

Jacki watched the boys at the fire, shaking her head she stood up and walked farther out towards the water. Sitting down gently she brought her knees into her chest and rested her chin there, watching the wVes lap up on the shore over and over again. Yawning she dug her toes into the sand and wiggled them around carelessly. Although they didn't eat often, she found she wasn't as hungry tonight. Maybe it was the beginning of a cold? Shaking it off she shut her eyes and breathed deeply to take in the fresh air. She could only hope they wouldn't be here forever.

Alex walked over to Jacki and grinned. "Hey!" He greeted enthusiastically. "Life is a party, you gotta learn to join the dance." He told her and looked her over. "You okay?" He asked and glanced at the others over at the fire.

Jacki looked up at him and raised a brow. "I'm fine." She said bluntly, she could see his gaze was back towards the fire. "You can go back."

"It's actually not that big a deal." Alex responded and took a seat beside her. "What's caught your interest over here? It's nothing but ocean, and stars." He muttered as if it were boring.

Jacki rolled her eyes, typical boy. "Oh mal'chik, you are so blind. Please don't make me pull a Pocahontas and start singing about the colors of the wind." She grunted. "Night time is the only bearable time here, in the city you can never see this many stars."

"You want to know what I see?" Alex slightly cocked his head at her strange foreign word. He allowed a slight laugh. "What was the Russian? But no seriously, what I see is an army of water protecting us from the government." He responded. "Maybe I want to hear you sing. I've also never seen Pocahontas"

Jacki blinked, everyone had seen Pocahontas. Shaking her head she didn't reply and instead turned her gaze out over the water to look at the sky. She thought it was interesting that the amount of starts they could see here were much more than how many they could see when there was light.

"I think it takes someone special to see what others can't." Alex pointed out and allow his gaze to wonder from the night sky and back onto Jacki. "You're beautiful."

Jacki scoffed and glanced at him for a moment. "I am not a fool mal'chik, and I am not going to be swooned by you." She said coldly. There was no way she was falling for that crap. She did not want to end up like poor Cora, sharing a child with such a boy.

Alex allowed an amused laugh from his chest. "Sorry, Jacki, sorry. I can't help but speak what I see. When you see true beauty you should comment." He shrugged.

Jacki scoffed and rolled her eyes again, these brothers were ridiculous. "Why don't you go play with your kid?" She muttered.

Alex shrugged. "She doesn't like me too much." He responded and tilted his head back and put his hands behind his head. "Why don't you try loosening up a little bit."

"I don't need to 'loosen up'. And how do you know she doesn't like you? She's an infant." Jacki huffed and crossed her arms.

"Sarah!" Cora grinned, hugging her back just as enthusiastically. "What're you up to?"

"Nothing. This island is boringgggg." Sarah said with a sing song tone. "We need an adventure."

Cora drew her eyebrows together in thought. "Let's make one then!" she suggested, straightening up with a lighted expression.

Sarah clapped her hands and stood up. "Alright let's go!" She grinned and began to march into the trees.

Anthony looked over at Cora and Sarah. Some how adventuring off into the woods wasn't the greatest idea to him. "Cora, Sarah." He shook his head after gaining their attention.

"You can tell when an infant doesn't like you believe me." Alex answered and grabbed a rock only to toss it far off into the ocean.

Sarah ignored Anthony and continued on.

"But can you tell when a grown person doesn't like you?" Jacki questioned.

"Yeah I think so." Alex responded and tilted his head trying to see what she was getting at. "I don't get where you're trying to go with this."

"Just wondering." Jacki shrugged and turned her gaze to her burrowing toes.

Alex got to his feet and offered his hand. "Come on let's go into the jungle, I promise I'm not going to try and take advantage of you."

"I can handle myself, I don't need you to promise me anything." Jacki huffed and stood up without taking his hand.

"Right, right." Alex responded and began to walked out into the jungle clearing away whatever was in their way with a machete. "You gotta promise you ain't going to tell the others about this place?"
